June 18/08

Beginning Thursday, June 19th, the City of North Vancouver will host the Buque Escuela GUAYAS at its signature landmark, the Burrard Dry Dock Pier located at the foot of Lonsdale Avenue on the City's historic waterfront.

The Ecuadorian Navy vessel conducts goodwill visits to several international ports and is visiting the City of North Vancouver as part of her training routine. The Buque Escuela GUAYAS will depart on Monday, June 23rd for ports in Japan and Korea.

The Buque Escuela GUAYAS will be open for ship tours on Thursday, June 19th from 2pm to 7pm and from Friday, June 20th to Sunday, June 22nd, 9am to 6pm daily.

An ideal docking point for naval ships, the Burrard Dry Dock Pier can accommodate large naval vessels by offering deep sea moorage and opportunities for onboard crew to rest before continuing on their regular tour of duties. The docked navy vessels provide and ambience and nautical atmosphere to the waterfront and a point of interest for residents and visitors. http://www.cnv.org/ThePier

The Burrard Dry Dock Pier and adjacent St. Roch Dock are only Phase I of a larger development plan for the Pier site. The City is presently taking the next steps toward establishing a National Maritime Centre for the Pacific and the Arctic, which will be located on the site in Lower Lonsdale.
