October, 2008 The Town of Sidney will soon be home to the New Marine
Centre an exciting project that is being constructed as a world-class facility
to showcase the extraordinary marine life of the ocean in the waters
surrounding Sidney by the Sea and the nearby Gulf Islands. Opening in 2009 the new Marine Centre has been designed to
become an internationally recognized Aquarium and Discovery Centre, with
construction and displays being of extraordinarily high-quality. The Centre will expose and explain the mysteries of the ocean surrounding southern Vancouver Island. The New Marine Centre has been planned so that each visitor will experience a personal undersea adventure extending from sea floor to seashore. Through expansive acrylic viewing panels, visitors will be introduced to complex ecosystems teeming with the colourful marine life that is resident to the region. Special effects will enhance the experience as visitors descend into the ocean depths to begin their undersea journey. There they will sense the compression of the deep and see live marine life from plankton to octupus. The New Marine Centre will occupy 10,000 square feet of prime waterfront property with spectacular views across the strait to the Gulf Islands and the mountains beyond.
