First Nations cultural centre re-opens, houses rare potlatch artifacts

The Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre, home to artifacts of the Kwakwakawakw nation on Quadra Island in BC, is now open to the public after a long hiatus. Located on the waterfront of the Cape Mudge Village on Quadra Island, the centre is a short ferry ride from Campbell River on Vancouver Island.

The Nuyumbalees Cultural Centre was closed several years ago for the completion of major renovations. The Nuyumbalees Society was founded by the hereditary and elected chiefs of the Kwakwakawakw people to negotiate the return of their potlatch artifacts and regalia. This historic collection of original Kwakwakawakw artifacts was returned in 1979, and now resides at the centre.

The centre also serves as a venue for traditional salmon barbecues, story telling and dance performances. The KwikwGillas (House of Eagles) Carving Centre next to the cultural centre is used for cultural programs, dances and as a resource centre.
